Know the location of your main water valve and routinely shut it off when leaving the house unoccupied.
Close up your crawl space and make sure heater(s) are turned on and working properly.
When leaving the house to return to your primary home, make sure all heat is set at 50 to 55 degrees in any area that has a water supply (including the crawl space if applicable). Keep the doors shut if you have individually controlled thermostats in each room to make heating as efficient as possible.
Leave vanity and sink cabinet doors open to allow heat to penetrate.
Make sure to install new batteries in battery operated smoke detectors.
Disconnect hose after summer season is over and store inside.
Turn off your outside faucet at the isolation valve and drain the water from it to prevent freezing.
Clean leaves and debris out of gutters to help ensure correct function of the gutters and downspouts.
Area around any compressor for heating units should be kept clear of snow etc. to allow proper functioning.
Spring & Summer
As soon as heating season is over, the crawl space should be opened to allow adequate ventilation.
Keeping a crawl space closed up in the summer will cause the supporting members of the house to rot. (Unless a dehumidifier is being used).
Remember to carefully check your outside faucet before using it if it wasn't properly protected from freezing.
Replace the batteries in battery operated smoke alarms.
